Is bokeh overrated?
Nov 20, 2011

While comparing pictures taken with my 2D DSLR vs my 3D Fuji W3, I feel that my Fuji W3 pictures are far more engaging, organic, and real-life even though the DSLR images are far superior in every way possible.

One main thing DSLR images appear high quality is the shallow DOF and bokeh. They have ton of it, while my tiny sensor Fuji 3D has everything in focus and no bokeh what-so-ever!

It got me thinking... isn't bokeh simply a workaround to mimic 3D in a 2D flat dimension? Why blur the non-focused area when you can have EVERYTHING in focus and let the viewer use their own eyes to focus on a particular area of the picture?

With 3D image that has deep DOF, viewers can explore the image by using their own eyes to focus on specific areas.

When/if 3D becomes ubiquitous, wouldn't human eyes produce better OOF area than simulated OOF?
