Actually, I believe this is incorrect. It is my understanding that the D700 hotshoe is different from the Canon, in that the Nikon hotshot is screwed down from inside the camera body. So replacement or tightening requires disassembly of the camera, unlike the Canon solution.

My two Nikon D700 bodies came back from NPS around the first of this year, having the hot shoes replaced. With heavy professional use during this year both cameras have performed flawlessly with three different SB900s, with no reoccurrence of the issues I had before the repair.
