It seems the internal battery is flat: switch on causes date request and then won't shoot. I found that the main battery can be less than full at the start. To use the camera when the internal battery is flat or near flat: cancel the date setting at turn on using the button at top tight of screen - you will then be able to focus and fire but images will have the default date set. When charged, you will be able to set the date correctly - that'#s how you know it's charged. Manual says it takes some 24 hours to fully recharge the internal battery. Mine took about 12 hours so likely it was not completely drained.
Seems the battery can fail so if not used for three months or if used too little to keep it charged enough.
