14-42mm X Lens Still Blurry After Firmware Update
Nov 18, 2011

I hoped and prayed the the version 1.1 firmware for the 14-42mm X lens from Panasonic might fix the awful double image/blurriness problem with the 14-42 X lens at 42mm, infinity focus, and shutter speeds between 1/100th and 1/200th, but unfortunately I have to report that the problem still exists. I'm not quite sure what I should do at this point... the reports from the 45-175 X users suggest that Panasonic CAN fix this by firmware, but they apparently didn't think it's really a problem. We really need some prominent review sites like DPReview to report publicly on this problem so that it can get the attention it deserves. I think I may hold on to the lens for a while because I can return it to the vendor until January 31, but if Panasonic can't fix this problem soon, the lens will certainly be going back. (Note that this is my 2nd copy of the lens to exhibit this problem!)

Here are screenshots of some 100% crops, all base ISO, 1/125th or 1/160th.

And here are some links to full-size versions. You'll notice that these don't look too horrendous viewed at normal sizes, but it doesn't take much cropping to make the blurriness become evident.
