P7100vertical image review oddity

Just observed this today: take a photo in horizontal aspect and then chimp it. Use the zoom lever to pixel peep on the P7100's LCD. All works smoothly as the view zooms in and out, thought the P7100 seems to like to jump to x3.0 immediately.
Take another photo in vertical aspect, then chimp as before. The P7100 hesitates to zoom in and sometimes doesn't zoom in at all.
