Moving to trash won't stop

I tried to move three unwanted programs from Applications to Trash. A window appeared with three progression bars labeled "Preparing to move to Trash". This window and contents has now been displayed for almost two hours. After an hour or so, I clicked for the operation to stop but the window and contents are still displayed after I have attempted to stop the operation an hour or so ago!

I cannot dispose of the window or stop it from "Preparing to move files to Trash".

I tried shutting down my computer but was denied because it was "still working".

I would appreciate your help and suggestions.
