I've never tried to use tracking AF underwater. In the past it simply hasn't been worth having the camera trying to chase a moving target as you are moving yourself. Perhaps the the XZ-1 is fast enough but my own preference is to make the focus process as fast and definitive as possible and to work on my diving. The XZ-1 is just about the fasted compact I've used, which helps.

I almost exclusively use Single-AF and just the central area - I find that works really well. For fish shooting I have in the past set a manual focus distance and then used the lack of lag to catch them as they swim into range.

Underwater photography relies a lot on diving technique. Don't expect stellar results until you are as well sorted as your camera
