Yes , he is mostly right . I have read that a UV CAN help in high UV areas [ salt flats and high desert areas in bright sun ]

To me - I use / have a filter on al my lenses - do I need them , I really don't know - but I can tell you it is a lot easier to change a filter and to clean a filter it later than try to rush cleaning a lens .

I have multiples of my UV , KSM CPL [ semi water proof CPL ] , and ND's - I don't use the split image , multi image , diopter ones enough to duplicate them .
Stay away from thin filters - no threads for other items like rubber hoods -

By the way , I also use filter stackers= they protect the filters in camera bag .
