how important is weather resistance in a zoom lens
Nov 13, 2011

I'd be interested to know how important it is to have a weather resistant zoom lens in non-extreme conditions. What type of damage can be caused to the lens, and how serious can this be? I am talking about using the camera for a few moments during rain, dusty conditions, etc. - but not extreme rugged conditions like kayaking, etc. The camera body seems to me to be the more sensitive area that needs weather protection, while the lens can be (easily?) cleaned.

I am asking because I would like to know if, all other things being equal, it is a good idea to spend additional money and have a WR lens, if you know you'll be able to take shots in bad weather, or at least won't have to be too worried about this.
The assumption is that the camera body is weather resistant.

Any anecdotes of weather-related damage to zoom lenses would be appreciated. Thanks!
