60D Lens Suggestions for Newborn portraits
Nov 12, 2011

Hi,

I'm expecting my second baby very soon. My eldest son is 4yr old. I need your help/suggestions for buying a good lens primarily for taking some good pictures/portraits of my newborn baby, toddler pictures and also some maternity pics. I wanted to avoid using the flash initially since its not good for the baby's eyes in the earlier stages. So I essentially I need a lens for low-light photography.

My style of photography: Family pictures, Travel photography mainly landscapes and Nature photography.

My current Gear:
Canon 60D with kit lens 18-135mm
Canon 10-22mm USM
Canon 55-250mm
Flash: 430 EX-II
Manofrotto Tripod

I had a Canon 50mm F1.8II earlier. But I sold it since I always had focusing problems.

There are some lenses in my mind:

1. Canon 17-55mm F2.8 (Expensive)
2. Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 (cheaper than canon)
3. Canon 50mm F1.4 USM
4. Sigma 30mm F1.4

Is there any other good lens for low-light photography? I'm even thinking of selling one of my existing either the 18-135mm or the 55-250mm to get the 17-50mm F2.8 lens. This would be my general purpose lens to photography my newborn/toddler and also some other outdoor shots. Will the above F2.8 lens be used for both or should i keep my existing lenses and buy an extra prime lens just for portraits.

Appreciate your suggestions and experiences on using the above lens.

Canon EOS 60D
