Try a careful newspaper test. Tape a newspaper to a flat wall. Line up the lens at a 'typical' distance, as close as possible to centered on a page and perpendicular, on a tripod.

Use Live View to get best focus. Mirror-lockup, and press shutter. Wait 30 seconds for shutter to release by itself, or use a remote release.

If it is bad then, you should see it easily. If not, then...? Perhaps your technique.

I looked closely at one of the bird shots, sitting on a branch, and looking at the branch and bird it did not look front- or back-focused. DOF was small though.
