Should Ricoh buy Olympus?
Nov 10, 2011

Or buy parts thereof of aforementioned company currently in dire trouble if they fracture it into divisions for quicker sale? Ricoh is a known buyer seeking to boost its sales and distribution channels, which of the other players would be willing to buy Olympus if not Ricoh? Samsung or Panasonic maybe?

This opportunity to buy not one but two historical camera companies in the space of just six months at bargain firesale prices is one that won't come around again for a long time.

So should Ricoh jump at the chance if it comes up and work out the consequences later? What exactly would be the consequences? Would it be good or bad for all involved? What would happen? Pentax Ricoh would get all Olympus' tech, patents, licences, facilities, distribution and market share user base - pretty much what they bought Pentax for too.

And then Ricoh and Pentax would automatically become part of the m4/3 consortium (or partnership, or maybe soon-to-be Panasonic singularity). Would they even want something like that anyway? Develop their own unique and unknown Pentax ILC, or go with the ready and known m4/3 one? This actually makes me think Pentax Ricoh would make the most sense as the other players like Samsung are already heavily committed to their own ILCs, and Panasonic buying Olympus would reduce m4/3 down to just their own proprietry ILC rather than a cross-platform standard system. Pentax Ricoh don't yet have an ILC system so could just buy the m4/3 off the shelf so to speak rather than spend R&D etc on developing a new one.

In just the space of a few months, Ricoh could go from just the GRD and GXR and a CX to having DSLRs, m4/3 ILCs, the Q ILC, medium format 645D and P&S models literally coming out their ears. Such phenomenal growth in camera models and systems in just six months would actually be faster than the model release timetable for just the CX itself!
