+1 for the Tamron 28-75/2.8 - cheap, sharp, and flexible - an all around great lens for portraits and general use. I'd rather soften an image than sharpen it.

I sold my DA* 16-50 and 50-135 and replaced them with the DA 15/4, and the Tammy 28-75 and 70-200/2.8. Never regretted the decision.
I do, however, have my eye on the DA* 55/1.4. That lens looks special...

My personal favorate portrait lens is a Tamron 28-75 2.8. Wide enough for groups, but not so wide as to add distortion. Long enough for nice tight shots.

I also have the 50-135 and the 70 Ltd. Both are magic, but not my choice for anything but partial body single subject shots.

Boy this is a tough choice. The main reason I have the 70 is for outings with the scouting groups I lead and bouncing around with my kids. But the 50-135 is just so much more versatile in focal length, sdm and sealing. I might give a slight nod to the 70 in bokeh and image quality, but hey are so very equal in my usage.

Good luck and enjoy the ride.
