Has the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 changed recently??

I am looking at picking up a Sigma 50mm this week before a trip.

I was looking at used ones on Fred Miranda and I see reference to "the new smooth finish version" and "older not all plastic version". Is there any validity to these statements and has the build materials/quality changed recently? If so which is the best to get?
