Canon EOS - X, found some lenses that may not work..
Nov 9, 2011

I was having a conversation with a couple of my friends in regards to cameras and lenses. My two friends was asking me about the Canon 1D-X and what makes it so great. Ernie picked up something I stated, which is that the camera does not focus if the F-stop of the lens is numerically larger than 5.6. Earlier I was talking about the 200-400mm Extender lens that Canon will be releasing, so he was comparing the focal length to his Tamron 200-500mm lens. As I was blabbering off the specifications he stopped and said “Wait a minute.. I just bought a $900 lens and you are telling me that if I was to use it with the brand new $6800 Canon EOS 1D-X camera it will not work?”

I was a bit confused, and I stated that I did not say that. Ernie said yes I did. So I asked him what does he mean. We look up the specifications for the lens, and it is the Tamron 200mm - 500mm f5-6.3 Di… I said I guess it won’t work near the tele-end of the lens.

So we decided to take a look at what lenses that Adorama sells for the EF mount that might not work.
This is what we come up with…
Sigma 18mm - 200mm f/3.5-6.3 II DC OS HSM Lens
Sigma 18mm - 200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC AF Lens
Sigma 18mm - 250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS Lens
Sigma 50mm - 500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM
Sigma 150mm - 500mm f/5-6.3 DG APO OS (Optical Stabilizer) HSM
Tamron 28mm - 300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR AF Di Aspherical (IF) Lens
Tamron 18mm - 200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR DI-II LD Aspherical (IF) Lens
Tamron 28mm - 300mm f/3.5-6.3 AF XR Di VC
Tamron 18mm - 270mm f/3.5-f/6.3 DI-II VC PZD
Tamron 200mm - 500mm f/5-6.3 SP Di
Pro-Optic 500mm f/6.3 Mirror Lens
Samyang 500mm f/8 Ultra Telephoto Manual Focus Mirror Lens

There is not a single lens from Canon, that has a f-stop that is numerically higher than 5.6, so I am wondering if that was also one of the design requirements for the camera. After I looked at all the lenses, I really doubt that anyone that is buying a Canon 1D-X would even consider any of the lenses above unless they were doing it for the heck of it, or already had one of the above lenses. The Sigma 150mm - 500mm f/5-6.3 DG APO OS (Optical Stabilizer) HSM and the Sigma 50mm - 500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM and the Tamron 200mm - 500mm f/5-6.3 SP Di all look like alternatives to the Canon 200-400mm Extender lens that is yet to be released.
