you and others might not agree, but looking at the shot, seems to me that the exposure is overall just about right (sky Vs hole in tree etc) - and indeed i think the focus on the birds head is also very close …

so what to do - here contrast and curves in Ps for the light and dark bits (light feathers/dark tail)- in raw processing it's interesting what is possible to bring out of a file when you move away from the standard post settings, which are just that for a wide variety of subject matter and maybe not the very best settings for every picture
