Nikon 55-300 versus Tamron 70-300 test
Nov 7, 2011

I did a small test of the Nikon 55-300 and the Tamron 70-300 at 300mm on a D7000. Center 100% crops are shown, Nikon left, Tamron right, f/5.6 upper, and f/8 lower row:

All from tripod, live view focus, MLU, best of several selected, ISO100.

The Tamron has better pixel level microcontrast but the effective focal length is shorter (focus distance about 19 feet). The Tamron corresponds to 283mm if the Nikon is 300mm and overall subject detail seems similar.

Autofocus with the Tamron is inconsistent and the stabilizer is less effective. The Nikon needs AF fine tune of +20 at 300mm and no adjustment at 55mm, making life miserable. I will probably send the Tamron back. Perhaps I will keep the Nikon for use almost exclusively at 300mm.
