Sync C drive to external HDD

Its late and I'm bored so I got to thinking.

If I copy my c drive to an external HDD than in the case of internal hard drive apocalypse would I be able to replace the internal HDD and than just copy everything back to it and be right back where I am today? Or is there more to it that I'm missing?
