I think (but I could be wrong) most people learn about Shutter speed, Aperture, and ISO before EV compensation

I agree, I would say it is Ken Rockwell looking to stir up some contraversy and get more eyes on his website.

I usually use manual and spot so didn't get around to learning what the EV button did until a couple of years ago. At first it was not intuitive for me, I am glad I learnt about it though as it makes for more reliable exposures than relying on 18% gray
