I would consider the Tamron 70-300/4-5.6 Di VC USD. It is better than the Canon 70-300/4-5.6 USM IS at the same price and only slightly under the performance of the Canon 70-300/4-5.6 USM L IS at 1/3 the price. Plus it has Tamrons new version of OS and an ultrasonic ring AF motor. The OS is not as good as the latest Canon version, maybe 2-3 stops verses 4. But not bad for a lens under $500 or so.

That is unless you can score a used or NOS copy of the Sigma 100-300/4 EX HSM APO. Even though the Sigma has no OS it is a real killer thru the entire range and it works well with both the Sigma and Canon L 1.4x TCs.
