Shooting Sports with the GF2...
Oct 24, 2011

This year our friends at the fantastic Dos Taquitos Centro in downtown Raleigh hosted their inaugural Day of the Dead 5K. My wife and son participated in the fun run, so I figured I'd volunteer to cover the event for our friends. Since the "can I shoot sports with MFT" question comes up a lot, I figured I'd share my results.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, while I was able to get some photos I was happy with, I still maintain that MFT is not an obvious choice for this type of work. You can't see the shots I missed, and if I was under the gun to get particular shots, I wouldn't have been able to do it with any consistency.

As usual, shot RAW and post-processed to varying degrees in Lightroom 3.5. I used AF-S with the 45-200mm on one GF2 getting shots of people coming towards me before they turned the corner to the finish. I used AF-S (typically pre-focusing) with the Olympus 9-18mm on my other GF2 to pop off shots as they came around the corner, getting a bit of the crowd and the church with the nice blue sky in the background. These were intentionally underexposed to preserve the sky - not sure it worked out too well since the gradient filter is a bit too obvious.

The winners:
