Very large landscapes

I frequently see very large prints (3-5 feet long) in office buildings, hospitals, etc. I suspect that most are shot with large format cameras. Has anyone tried this with a digital SLR? If so, how many megapixel camera would you need to pull this off? I have a D80 and have a few pictures blown up on canvas (24" by something) that turned out well, but have not tried to do the very large prints. Can anyone comment on their experience?
