Same here - my 5 year old 18-200mm VR1's zoom ring got too loose for my liking. What one can do, if one doesn't want to spend $14 on a replacement, is.... use an exacto knife to cut the ring, then use black electrical tape to tighten it back up. That's what I did. Works just about as well as just the plain rubber itself. If needed, a couple of rubber bands added could help give more grip. Ugly, but functional and low or no cost for a fix.

Should the rubber ring be better? Sure. Is it better? No. Can I fix it myself? Sure!
