D700 + 50mm 1.4G = slow autofocus.

I bought the D700 and the 50mm 1.4G for about a month now, they are both my first and only DSLR and lens. I feel the autofocus is not any faster than my P&S camera. I have missed lots of moments because of the slow autofocus, did I buy the wrong camera/lens if I want really fast focus?
