D40 vs J1/V1

I own a D40 and like it, but it seldom gets taken to social occasions because of its bulk (I have the 18-200VR mounted on it permanently, like a superzoom). I like the dimensions of the J1 and V1, and am considering replacing the D40 with one of them if image quality upto ISO 1600 is comparable to that of the D40. Has anyone performed such a comparison? I would be grateful for any details.
