I just got my Tamron 70-300 F4-5.6 SP Di USD and it is awesome. It has full time manual override, quick and SILENT focusing, and it is ssssssharp. Some examples here https://secure.flickr.com/photos/jonasjschreiber/sets/72157627785346609/ though I've only had one day of shooting on it. Kurt Munger compares it to the Sony 70-300 and says it is comparable. Best of all, it was $409 with a $50 mail in rebate, which comes to $359.

well you have a lot of choice in this space. might I suggest a 70-300G it's not a fast lens but you can't beat the quality and you'll have some left over of your 1000 to get a 85 F2.8 sam to give you really low light reach for portraits and such
