Best, reasonably-priced, Mac Mini for photography
Oct 16, 2011

I'm currently trying to decide between these two Mac Mini configurations, for a machine used solely for photography (Photoshop, PTGui, PhotoMechanic and Raw Developer):

  • Base Mac Mini, with the 500Gb drive swapped out (DIY) for a 128Gb OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD drive + 8Gb of Crucial ram. UK price about £800

  • Base Mac Mini Server, 2 x 500Gb drives upgraded to 2 x 750Gb drives (Apple store) and set up as RAID0 + 8Gb of Crucial ram. UK price £972.

I already own an ageing G5 tower (2005 - 2.3ghz, dualcore, 12Gb ram), and a 2011 13" Macbook Air. The Air runs rings around the G5, but I'd like something faster still. I work with large, layered, 16 bit Photoshop files (up to 1.5Gb).

Any thoughts?

(I had been waiting for the new Mac Pros, but I'm not sure if I really need one. I'm also not sure if they'll ever appear.)
