500mm f/4 lens
Oct 16, 2011

Sony apparently has no use for sports or nature photographers. There has not been the introduction of the 500mm f/4 lens although the lens has probably been in Sony’s existence for several years. A 600mm f/4 has not ever been mentioned by Sony.

The only so called long telephotos by Sony are the 500mm f/8 mirror lens and the 70 – 400mm f4-5.6. While the 70-400mm lens is by all, accounts an excellent lens, it does not satisfy the long distance f/4 requirement for sport or nature photographers. The 500mm f/8 mirror comes nowhere close to an f/4 aperture.

There is no 500mm f/4 lens available for any Sony user.

Sony had stated some time ago that the 500mm f/4 lens would be introduced in July or along with the A77 SLT. That has not happened. Why not?

Perhaps Carl Garrard, who seems to be in contact with high level Sony engineers/management at least in the area of Sony cameras, can offer some reply to the failure of Sony’s introduction of the 500mm f/4 lens.
