USB port stopped working: Toshiba Satellite A665

The USB port worked the other day but today it does not. Toshiba tech support had me reinstall the drivers but it didn't help.
The only changes recently were eight Windows (7) automatic updates which, against my better judgement based on past experiences, I keep on automatic because it was highly recommended in this forum to do so.
Tech support suggested I try a system restore. But it seems that the Windows updates the other day (all security updated) have knocked out all my restore points.
He also suggested I do a complete reinstall of the system but it will take days to reinstall all my programs. If I send it in for repair, I'll be without the notebook for at least three weeks. No thank you.
I can live without the usb port (the two others work) but it bugs me that it stopped working on a seven month old computer.
Does anyone have any other suggestions that I might try? Thank you!
