Need Studio Lighting Suggestions

I am just getting my head around photography. I have the Sony A55. I don't yet have a flash. Should I get a flash and a couple lights to start? Where should I start? Are there any lighting kits I should look at. Trying not to break the bank.
Looking for a simpler versatile system to do portraits and product photography.
