I will have to try using the spot meter for manual exposures like the good-old-days of external meters and needles in TTL!

I like extended DR over Hyper myself, and use a tripod with the fun of manual work on layers and masks now taking up the odd autumn eve.

However I did an okay four layer handheld (one became mask) but it was lacking exactly in what you describe, becuase it was just three autobrackets!! ages in aligning manually thrown down the swanni!

A monopod is my next investment for walk arounds with possibilities for exposure blending. You can of course frame handheld alone, but at the extreme the exposure is likely to get slow so a 'pod will help.
