K5 due on Wednesday !
Oct 11, 2011

I have managed to justify (to my wife and myself) buying a K5 with the DA* 50-135 f/2.8 zoom. At the last minute I decided to get the kit rather than the Body only... the 18-55 gives me something for landscapes and general purpose use when the 50-135 is overkill and it's something of a bargain at only $150.

Now to find out just how little use film photography experience 25 years ago is in the digital age !

Having a wonderful new camera will not make me even a competent photographer for a while, but the learning curve is much cheaper now than it was in the days of film.

Still, I won't be able to blame the gear... the combination of the K5 and the 50-135 should be perfect for photographing events using natural light, which is my main 'specialist' requirement. I suspect that the 18-55 will end up being my daily lens for anything that does not need the range, speed and quiet of the 50-135 and the dynamic range of the K5 will do the rest.

Quick question... I envisage using the built-in flash mainly for fill but, since it is relatively inflexible (can't bounce it off the ceiling exactly, unless I'm photographing the chandelier), I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for ways to soften the light from it... just an easy to attach and remove diffractor perhaps.

Thanks and please be gentle when I post my first few samples for reviewing !
