There is Sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6 APO-M Macro for Canon, at about half the price of the EF 100 f/2.8 USM Macro.

As noted, f/2.8 makes for much better performance at f/4 and f/5.6, it has fast quiet focusing, and almost 5x shorter minimum focusing distance.

There is also quite a bit of difference in glass quality. There is an EF 100mm f/2,8L IS USM and a comparable Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS Macro, both close to $1k.
