How do you feel about prime lenses?

I am saving up for the 75 - 300 G lens, but I am debating if i should by a prime lens as well. How do you guys feel about them? Do you use them often or do you usually use zoom lenses? I usually take pictures of my family and of the products i sell in my shop.
