If you have a flash with the IR focusing beam on it, turn the flash off and just use the IR beam to provide contrast the camera focusing system can pick up on. For some silly reason, the IR beam used to be on the Camera - e.g. my Canon 10s (film) - but Canon moved it to the flash. You turn the flash off in your menu options.

If you have the ST-E2, you can use it without using it to fire a flash, the IR beam will aid focusing in lower light and less than ideal contrast situations.

An excellent lens lasts a lifetime, an excellent DSLR, not so long.
