17-50/2.8 or 18-200 zoom for newbie

Buying a lens for my cousin. He is a newbie into photography, he just want some good pics, even the nikon 18-55 kit lens is good enough for him.

I don't want to recommend the kit lens to him because its quality is so so and the zoom range is not long enough. So my choice narrow downs to two type of lenses:

1) a 17-50/2.8 fast zoom

2) a 18-200mm walk around lens

As you can see, each choice has trade offs, the 17-50/2.8 is fast, good in low light and have better image quality, but it may not be long enough. The 18-200 is great, he can shoot everything near and far with it, image quality is good enough too, but will suffer in low light...

He only needs one lens, and he will probably never upgrade his gears. Which would you recommend? The camera will be a DX camera.
