How bad (or good) is the Tamron 17-50mm VC on a 7D?

I just got the Canon 7d and... to make the long story short, I can't afford to buy the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens at this time (over $1000).

My goal is to get multiple candid indoor shots of family members, especially kids, without the use of the flash. Is the Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 SP XR Di II VC (around $500) a good alternate lens over the canon lens (mentioned above) for my trigger-happy goal?
