In reply to verybiglebowski, Sep 30, 2011

I just purchased CanonEF 300F2.8L Mark II and for birds photography I am using it with Canon 2x TC Mark III, When comes to IQ It is very good combo but for as I already found the 4kg (together with 1D M4) is max for hand shots. EF 400 F2.8 is much heavier and with 2x TC IQ is = 300F2.8 + 2x TC.
600mm and F5.6 is sufficient for ZOO shots.

If you already do not like weight of 300 2.8L dont go for 400 2.8L because it is much bigger and heavier. 600mm and F5.6 (300mm + 2x TC) is sufficient for ZOO shots.
