Panning with D90.. Help plz

I m interested in taking some panning shots with D90..current lens i have is 16-85, 35/1.8 and 85/1.8D lens..
can someone give me tips on how to proceed, which more i should use and it would be great if you could post some pics with EXIF data..
I m planning to take photos of marathon and cycle race which is gonna happen in another 2 weeks time.. and some street shots of car..
