Decent camera for GCSE photography? Must be bought in Argos!

Hi!
A friend wants to join the same GCSE photography class i've enrolled in, beginner.
I'v advised him to get a 2nd-user dSLR, but money's tight, and he wants to get it on credit with his Argos card.
So, I'm guessing a new dSLR will be out of the question (but I'll show him the D3000 as an option at £350) - which decent, cheap camera (any kind) could you recommend with at least manual controls as an option?
