In defense of the Nikon 1 CX series
Sep 22, 2011

These cameras are copping a lot of flak.

and yet I'll post another opinion...

slow lenses, small sensors etc.

I think that it is still very early to criticise Nikon for their idea.
It is within a few days of their first announcements of a wholly NEW system.
I'm sure that faster prime and zoom lenses will be on it's way and other models.

Olympus, Samsung and Panasonic mirroless cameras were first released with slow zooms and f/2.8 primes and now slowly have more extensive lens ranges. The AF seems to be world beating and the speed both of AF and imaging sounds great!

As for sensor size, people are complaining about depth of field, noise and IQ. But if you really want to do FX or DX portraits, there are many cameras and lenses for that already. studio flash??? well, these aren't really aimed for that market I don't think. Anyway maybe a future flash unit that can link into the CLS of the D900/D800/D600 etc, but a bigger DSLR might be more appropriate.

I use a D3s on almost a daily basis with all the accompanying lenses and flashes, but carry a LX5 for most of my snaps, videos etc. I also use D700 and D300 when the occasion requires. But these CX cameras aren't meant for those uses. These are much closer to the LX5 and EX1.

Alot of DPR readers and posters are enthusiasts and love sexy fast primes and groovy cameras like the X100. Myself included. But I do have an open mind about new ideas such as these. It maybe a great upgrade for the LX5, but surely it doesn't deserve so much bile! I’m sure too that these will outsell the X100s and the Ricoh GRs. And who’s to say that Nikon won’t do a FF X100 with a 28mm f/2 Nikkor? Remember those niche compacts the 28Ti and the 35Ti? Never sold as well as their regular compacts but how so many people loved them, though never actually bought them!

Maybe all are frustrated that this wasn't the long overdue D700 replacement!

But this is a company that has a venerable history of not just camera making but also of optics, unlike Samsung and Panasonic. The Nikon F was the first of it’s kind. As was the D1, and when the D3 was released the forums too, ignited about the 12MP sensor, while others charged ahead with more and more MP. There are still very few, if any, cameras that approach the D3 and the D3s for lowlight work. And of course their lens lagacy. This company has designed lenses for over 5 decades, possibly more. From the 58mm f/1.2 Noct to classics such as the 105mm f/2.5 and the 28mmf/2.8 AIS. And of course, specialist optics such as microscopes etc. I'm sure a few fast primes aren't too far away.

These CX cameras may not be for shooting that shallow depth of field portrait or shoot at 12800 ISO, but you know not everyone in the world wants a camera for that. And the AF technology and the new EXPEED will turn up on the more pro bodies...

Enjoy shooting and whether it’s with a tiny camera in your pocket with a small sensor or one built into your phone ( basetrack.org work with iPhones ) or the big hulking weathersealed DSLR at 11fps with an 85mm f/1.4 AFS, great!
