Embarssment: The dpreview "hands on" Nikon 1
Sep 22, 2011

The dpreview of the Nikon 1 is just an embarrassment. Please declare your conflict of interest, dpreview, like doctors who publish in New England Journal and who work for drug companies. What does Amazon make on sales of Nikon cameras? This is such a "drinking the koolaide" piece, it is just disgusting.

Here is the truth. The executives at Nikon let the marketing people rather than the engineering people have their way, after they panicked over mirrorless growth rates. So they produced an IQ disabled camera with the goal of confusing the market. But the engineering people still got to put a few of their new tricks into the junk food the marketing people wanted. So, weirdly, we see the fastest focus camera in the Nikon line up with huge frame rate capabilities. What this technology means is that the top end cameras cannot be deprived of mirrorless technology for long. Fast focus without mirrors is coming people, and the information on adjacent frames will improve the image on the chosen frame when frames are flushing at 60 fps. Thus, the engineering people sent a clear signal that mirrors in the light path are doomed, but they did it in the manner of a prisoner of war giving the middle finger in a photo of a happy prison camp. If Nikon doesn't incorporate this type of new focus technology and frame rates into their top of the line cameras, someone else will.

Meanwhile this particular line makes no sense. It is the Nikon version of the Kodak disk camera, a marketing response to an engineering challenge.
