Nikon AF-S 400/2.8 D IF-ED vs. Nikon AF-S 400/2.8 G IF-ED VR

I purchased an absolute mint and never used Nikon AF-S 400/2.8 D IF-ED on ebay back in 2009, I am really happy with it but I am curious to see the major differences between my lens and a newer AF-S 400/2.8 G IF-ED VR in terms of noticable optics and image quality.
I know my lens does not have VR, but say shooting sports, wildlife, is there a major difference in my lens and the newest version?
I bought this lens in and paid $6,700 and I know I overpaid for it considering this same lens in not quite as good of quality is now going for under $5,000.
I was lightly considering taking a hit on it and getting a 200-400 VR II (I know the 200-400 is about the same as what I paid for my lens), but I could afford the difference.
Typically I shoot at 400mm but the weight sucks for hand holding. I do have a Wimberly mount, but still hand hold sometimes. My assumption is that most would figure keeping the setup I currently have.
Thanks,
Randy
