Have 24G, would I be happy with a 18-200?

Have been using only primes (24mm F1/4 G, 35mm f1.8, 60mm f2.8) on my D7000 for awhile now and have been very satisfied with sharpness of all these three lenses.
I have been thinking to add a zoom lens for outdoor travel for convenience. I used to own a 16-85mm but had backfocus problem and fine tuning does only fix it at one focal length rending other focal length out of focus - so I sold it. Since then, I was afraid of getting a zoom afraid of the same thing happening.
Am I going to face the same problem with all zoom lens? if not, would I be happy with the image quality of the Nikon 18-200 VR II? Any alternatives?
Any comments welcome!
