As everyone is saying fast prime is the way to go. For that really big special event I would suggest renting the 70-200 F2.8 lens. My kids are in karate and karate and gymnastics share two traits. They are fast and have terrible lighting conditions. I use a 50 1.8 lens most often but rented the 24 -70 F2.8L and Got a lot more keepers with the better lens because if focused faster.

I'd recommend the 85 1.8 lens over the 50 because it sounds like your going to be further away for one and also because I keep seeing folks say it is a great fast focusing lens. I cannot say that about my 50 1.8 lens.

Your already getting the 60d so I won't recommend that over a rebel for the frame rate. With a Rebel body I so want a 7d for the frame rate.
