Did Fuji Get It Wrong?
Sep 17, 2011

I have been watching the talk surrounding the X100 in the other Fuji forum, and it seems that there are a few issues surrounding the x100.

People like the flexibility of the camera as well as the IQ, and some folks have posted some nice sharp images, and seem reasonably happy with the x100. I wonder though just how satisfied with their Fuji product some really are?

Take for instance the long list of firmware fixes needed to address problems. There is even a forum member asking when the next firmware fix is due.

Add to this a long list of problems being encountered by owners that seem to suggest that there are other build quality issues as well. I shan't list then here as the list is too long and not all the problems are necessarily faults with the camera, but come under the heading of "operator error".

But for me the most damning issue being encountered has to be the aperture failure, where the mechanics of the aperture blades appear to be giving trouble.

Now I seem to remember saying some time ago that I didn't believe that the x100 was really worth all the money to have what was supposed to be a retro styled Leica like camera for the enthusiast photographer. I still think its not worth it.

Apart from it being a handy if somewhat unreliable travel cam for those that wanted one, for a lot of us "enthusiast" photographers we choose the HS20 route.
After seeing the issues that have come to light I am very glad I did.

The cost is still, at least here in New Zealand prohibitive, when you can buy a camera such as the Pentax Kr twin lens kit for two thirds of the x100's price and the Pentax will be better in every department other than physical style.
I could buy three HS20's for the same money as well.

If you compare the firmware list of the HS20 & minor issues (battery cover for eg:)

And the very small amount of feedback re_ disgruntled owners, you have to wonder just how Fuji thinks its going to conquer the world with the X-10.

So have Fuji got it wrong with the X100 and have they decided that the X10 is now going to be the flagship point and shoot from Fuji, because that's all the X100 really appears to be, a very expensive point & shoot.
