Weight of the Nikon 70-200

I just purchased the 70-200 after reading about its weight but seeing comments about how great a lens it is. I used it for the past several weeks. It is one heavy lens, but it is sharp and I really like it. So here is my question.
When I am carrying it and using a black rapid strap it is comfortable but can the heaviness of the lens cause damage to the D90 camera body or the lens at the attachment ring? I see many professional photographers with lenses much bigger than mine hanging around their necks and dangling at their sides. Are the types of cameras they are using built to hold a heavy professional lens like that? Does the D3 or D3x have a stronger ring to hold such a heavy camera? Is it stronger than the D90?
Thanks for any assistance.
