Size matters: the search for lightweight gear

I've got the itch for new gear... something light to complement my d700... and have considered everything from a S95 compact digicam, to the G12 big digicam, to the G3 4/3 system, to a small dslr like the D3000. But I've come to the conclusion that no matter how many cameras I own, I'll always reach for my best camera, which would be my d700. So no lightweight rigs for me. My concession for weight is a small manual focus prime lens and a tiny bounce flash. I've been auditioning the d700 105/2.5ais sb-400 combo, which is about as lightweight a portrait rig as I can assemble.

It's reasonably lightweight.

Camera: 995g
Lens: 435g
Flash: 28g

Total: 1435g = 3.2 lbs.

This sample is a grab shot of a Starbucks barista with a great smile, taken yesterday.

I've made compromises with this rig, but none that has affected image quality.
