Yes, but I think VR has caused many to subconsciously develop a style that causes them to pause at half press when not required.....slowing the entire process and back button focus helps break that habit.....Maybe

Settting up the camera to use af-c and back button focus is for dynamic shots that you will want to use trap focus and constant at the same time.

Baseball:

AF-on to batter, release and then wait till he swings to take pic. Then when the runner takes off from 3rd base, press and hold af-on to track him back to the plate.

Soccer:

af-on and hold to track them coming down field, af-on and release for the goalie waiting for a shot.

Weddings: af-on and release for the bride and groom in doorway. Af-on and hold when they enter and dance.

Portrait: Just use the shutter button with half press

Landscape: Doesn't really matter.
