Review: ECU1 Wide Angle Adapter for 16mm f/2.8

I posted my review of the VCL ECU1 Wide Angle Adapter for the 16mm f/2.8 lens with full size samples on the end of page 3:

Overall the performance is good for an add on lens. By adding the Wide Angle Adapter you can maintain most of the performance of the 16mm f/2.8 but effectively have a 12mm f/2.8 lens. The characteristics are very similar, but slightly more pronounced. If you are happy with the 16mm f/2.8, you should be happy with the adapter. If you don't like the 16mm, pass on the 16mm with the adapter.

Minimum focus is shorter with the adapter. Informal measurements put it at about 7" vs 9" without the adapter. I imagine the magnification stays about the same.

Flare is slightly more pronounced. I only saw flare in one of my 16mm shots, where I saw some light flare in several of the 12mm shots.

The camera is unaware the lens is attached. This will impact auto corrections in Lightroom and the EXIF will be wrong.

No filter use with the adapter.

Bottom Line:

If you want to spend $250 US for the SEL16F28 and $100 US for the ECU1, you pay $350 for both a 16mm f/2.8 and a 12mm f/2.8 lens, that combined are about the size of a kit lens. Resolution performance is acceptable (not to the levels of a Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6, but not terrible either and about 2 f/stops larger aperture). Flare performance is superb for the 16mm and good with the adapter.
